fall gardening in San Diego

fresh fall celery

As the seasonal heat comes to a sizzling crescendo, summer squash vines are drying up, the tomato plants are looking ragged, and unless in shaded pots, the lettuce is all but wilted. As fall sets in, think about planting a cooler weather garden. San Diego County has fabulous fall weather that even allows for some plants typically grown in spring. Try vegetables with a short time to harvest such as radishes. String beans, chard, celery, and bok choy also do well.

There’s nothing like inviting guests to a holiday dinner and rushing out in the nippy winter winds for some fresh from the garden greens. Toast some sesame seeds in olive oil, toss in fresh bok choy and stir till soft. The nutty toasted sesame seeds juxtaposed against warm, limp greens is a mouthful to remember – - and a fresh from the garden holiday classic at my house.

Other pluses to fall gardening: fall vegetable gardening in San Diego
Fewer bugs are out to make a meal of your plants and veggies. And autumn gardens require less water (so you save money). Cutting water use is routine for us in San Diego, and native plant gardening provides a solution. Fall is touted as the best time to plant San Diego native plants.

If you’re in the mood for some fall gardening, won’t you try one of my favorite North San Diego County nurseries? Buena Creek Gardens in San Marcos is a lovely place to stroll and relax. This is no typical nursery … but a grounds where tranquility envelops among the blooms, birds, butterflies and greenery. Right now, Buena Creek Gardens is offering a half-off special, too.

Enjoy your fall gardening in San Diego.
