Don’t drink and drive. Get a free ride home in the San Diego area.
On New Year’s Eve, Sprinter trains, Coaster trains, and Breeze buses are free to riders after 6p.m. North County Transit District is also offering some late runs so there’s no excuse not to get a free ride home on New Year’s Eve. Find out details about where and when the extended ride times run so you can get a free ride home on New Year’s Eve.
AAA (Authomobile Club of Southern California) is also helping out. Between 6pm and 6am drivers can get a free ride and tow on New Year’s Eve (mileage limit: 7). Drivers needing the service should call (800) 400-4AAA and ask for Tipsy Tow. Party hosts can call for their guests who do a little too much drinking, as can bar owners, and others wanting their guests to have a safe ride home. Passengers are not included in the Tipsy Tow program (driver of the towed car only). If you need a tow farther than 7 miles, you’ll pay regular rates.
Not up for free public transit or calling Tipsy Tow, then find a designated driver before you party. If YOU are serving as designated driver, take the responsibility seriously, do the job right (sober) — and thank you for keeping us safe on the roads.

Free ReUsable Bags
Officially, it’s called “Day Without a Bag,” an event that started in Encinitas and has now gone San Diego County-wide on an annual basis. This year, December 15 is the official day for you to go green and not use plastic bags, hence the name Day Without a Bag. But there’s more! Free reusable bags are a giveaway at many stores in San Diego County.
So, why not frequent participating stores in No Bag Day San Diego, do some holiday shopping, and take home a free reusable bag as your gift? You might also save money on wrapping paper and use the bag to wrap your gift (it’s two gifts in one). Here are a few more ways to save on wrapping paper and cards, too. Free Banking Still Exists
About a year ago, when my teenage daughter went to open a checking account, we sought out a “free” type account. It used to be common for banks to offer free checking accounts to students/young people. Unfortunately, Bank of America had done away with their truly free checking. Union Bank of California did still have a free account, so that’s where she opened her first account. Unfortunately, just this last week, she received a notice that the account would change with the New Year. The change involves fees — no surprise there! Seems banks are making the news a lot lately, with extra fees they’re charging consumers.
A student may not be able to maintain the rather hefty minimum balance required to stave off fees. In fact, in today’s tough economy, there are many people who can’t maintain a large balance. A minimum direct deposit can also waive fees, but what if you’ve lost your job, or your employer doesn’t offer direct deposit?
In response to my daughter’s bank changing its policies — which will result in fees — we did a little research and discovered that San Diego County Credit Union still offers a free checking account that features electronic statements (no paper statements). And there are many, many locations around San Diego County.
Have you received a bank envelope in the mail? It may not be your statement … it could be a fee notice. If you’re currently paying fees for your bank accounts, consider switching to a free option. Taking up the on-the-cheap philosophy can save you money. Multiply the monthly fee for the year and think of what you could buy with that lump sum — it’s not peanuts!
San Diego County Credit Union may not be the only one that offers free accounts. If you know of another financial institution that offers free checking, leave a comment for the benefit of other SDOTC readers.
