Weekly Roundup of San Diego free events (or close to free San Diego events)
Something fun is always happening somewhere in San Diego. This weekend, check out the cool free events — some of which are quintessential San Diego in nature.
Sandcastle Days 2011: US Open Sandcastle Competition - free to watch (fee to enter). Each year, the throngs gather to see the interesting castles and creatures built of sand at this yearly Imperial Beach event. The street fair with vendors and fun is on Saturday and the contest is Sunday (see the sand sculptures between 9am and 4pm).
What could be more San Diego than a beachside street fair and sand castle contest?
Maybe the Vintage Surf Board show and sale that takes place Saturday. Yeah that’s at least equally as “San Diego” in character.
America’s Finest Beer Festival — CANCELLED. Okay, so this wasn’t a free event. Just as a service, you might want to know this was cancelled at the last minute.
Okay, so the beer festival’s cancelled. How about a wine fest?
Spaphile Wine & Spa event takes place Saturday from 3pm to 7pm at Fifty-Seven Degrees. Grab your ticket and get details.
Shark Night 3D Experience. Sheer terror says Relativity Media, which brings this experience to the Petco Park parking lot all weekend. Photo opportunities, as well as some freebie giveaways. Near the ComiCon event site. Free.

Vintage 1960s Challenger Pintail Surfboard
This Saturday, July 23, get set for a cool display of vintage surf boards (like this 1960s Challenger Pintail on the left owned by a San Diego on the Cheap fan from North County). You can attend just to look at the boards, swap boards with other local surfers, or sell your used surfboard.
The details:
This Saturday, July 23, at Patagonia in Cardiff, enjoy the “Board Swap” event that lets you sell your used surfboard, or buy a used one from a cool dude looking to upgrade or unload a vintage board. San Diego area surfers will be selling all sorts of boards from 9 a.m. to 2p.m. Used board owners set their own prices.
If you want to sell your board, reserve your spot — call the store: 760-634-9886 or email: Shipper_Cardiff@patagonia.com. Deadline is July 21, midnight.
This year, vintage surfboard collectors will display boards that date back to first wave in San Diego …. well, maybe not that far back, but you get the drift.
Free and open to the public. Saturday, July 23, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Patagonia in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. More details here.
